nick bryant just another wordpress.com weblog home about iceland – day 13 august 1, 2009 iceland – day 13 today was the big road trip day – 370km from akureyri to reykjavik. the trip went pretty quickly in the end. the road between the two biggest towns in iceland is the best section of the route 1, no single lane bridges or gravel sections to slow progress. some pretty good sights along the way as well, though not as many as on other sections of the journey. stopped off in bourganes for some lunch, and vistied the settlement centre. this has some audio guided exhibitions about the settlement of iceland (boring, and nowhere near as good as the 871 exhibition in reykjavik), and a summary of egil’s saga, which was actually quite entertaining, and the sculptures and models used for it were quite entertainingly quirky. he was a complete git, though – his poetry must have been fantastic for him to survive to such a ripe old age and get away with all the stuff he did. got to reykjavik just after 5pm. went for a wander through the town, the dinner at the fish market restaurant. lucky enough to get the last two seats at the bar, and enjoyed an expensive but lovely fish dinner. it is a japanese influnced kind of place, but it is not over done, and the fish tastes wonderfully fresh. claire had halibut, and i had monkfish (monkfish in pastry with camembert, with monkfish cheeks deep fried in tempura batter). then a quick beer in a bar, walk past the soltar statue, and back to fosshotel baron. the town is noticably quiet – as it is merchants’ weekend apparently most of ‘the youth’ head out into the countryside to get hammered in campsites or at festivals, so no sign of the legendary reykjavik ‘runtur’ mass pub crawl. advertisements leave a comment » | holiday , uncategorized | permalink posted by nickbryant iceland – day 12 august 1, 2009 iceland – day 12 today was a day spent in akureyri, iceland’s second biggest town, and the ‘capital of the north’ (pop. 17000) went for a walk during the (wet) day. wandered through the old part of town, then up and over the hill into the newer centre of town. in the late afternoon we went to brynja ice cream parlour, which is supposed to serve the best ice cream in iceland. it was pretty chilly out (8 degrees) but they were still doing a brisk trade in their soft ice cream. the chap in front of us was buying a litre of it in a big jug. got a large cone, which is so large you have to eat it upside down in a tup, sprinkle with toblerone chunks. then wandered into town for a couple of drinks in cafe paris, and then on to strikio for dinner. the restaurant is on the top floor of an office block, but has wonderful views over the fjord. had a superb meal there, one of the best of the trip – the starters in particular were excellent (and huge). claire had scallops followed by cod in lobster sauce, i had venison salad followed by salt cod. akureyri is a strange sort of place. when first seeing it, you think there is not much to it. but it is really rather a cute place, with a small town feel. they have a thing going on at the moment where the have red heart shapes everywhere. apparently it started during the merchant’s weekend last year (which is the first weekend in august, as it is now) but the townspeople kept it going. lots of the shops have hearts in their windows, there is a huge lit up outline of a heart on the other side if the fjord, and even the red traffic lights have been shaped into hearts. leave a comment » | holiday , uncategorized | permalink posted by nickbryant iceland – day 11 july 31, 2009 iceland – day 11 started off the day with a lovely breakfast at the skutustadir guest house. farm’s own skyr and home made jam, good stuff. walk around and an area of the lake which is good for local bird life, then on to dimmonborgir lava formations. really impressive sight, quite odd walking around an area of such obvious volcanic activity. headed on to husavik to go whale watching. tipping it down with rain, but went for lunch to wait it out. rain had not got any worse, so we went ahead with the trip. claire caught a glimpse of a minke whale, and we both spotted a porpoise. but other than that, no more whales. but there were plenty of puffins on the sea, and the trip itself was an adventure, what with having to get into waterproof suits and being out on the choppy north atlantic in the rain. then moved on from there to akureyri. another slightly scary trip, descending off a big hill in rain and low clouds, with sharp corners. but made it here to the hotel edda where we will be for the next couple of nights. went to the baudinn retaurant for a burger in the evening. leave a comment » | holiday , uncategorized | permalink posted by nickbryant iceland – day 10 july 29, 2009 iceland – day 10 the first excitement of the day was attempting the climb up the 18% hairpins to get out of the fjord area in a yaris. surprisingly easy in the end, only one scary bit when having to rev hard in 1st to get up a paricularly steep incline, but also worrying about spinning the wheels on wet gravel with a steep drop off the edge. but made it up with no problems. drove from solbrekka to myvatn area in 3 hours. was expecting a really boring drive, but a lot of the scenery was breathtaking, particularly some of the hilly volcanic plains which were almost extraterrestrial. visited the krafla and hverir volcanic areas. stunning places, though absolutely stinky – the smell of rotten eggs from the sulphur is very pronounced. then on to our guesthouse at skútustaðir, on the south edge of lake myvatn. a few midges around, but i think the cold and wet weather had put them off (myvatn means ‘midge water’). guesthouse is really nice, cracking views. went for dinner across the road at the local hotel. really good food again, the food here has been mostly excellent, particularly the fish. then a walk around the pseudocraters across the road from us (caused by steam bursting through lava as lava hit the lake in the past), and then back along the edge of the lake. leave a comment » | holiday , uncategorized | permalink posted by nickbryant iceland – day 9 july 28, 2009 iceland – day 9 day of relaxation in sólbrekka in the eastern fjords. staying in a wooden cabin overlooking the water. nothing to do here at all, other than wander around the tiny settlement. pretty rainy and foggy all day, but it lifted enough for us to go out for a wander. had some lunch in the small cafe opposite the harbour, which seems to double as the school/town hall/everything for the couple of dozen people who live there. there used to be a lot of farms nearby, but they are dying out one by one. saw a french couple in town who are leaving later in a mercedes a-class. so i figure if they can get up the hill out of town, then the yaris should be ok. but if i see them parked outside the cafe tomorrow morning desperately looking for a kindly local with a 4×4 and a tow rope, i will start to panic. leave a comment » | holiday , uncategorized | permalink posted by nickbryant iceland – day 8 july 28, 2009 iceland – day 8 overnighted on the ‘naughty step’ at arananes, outside hofn. had to take our shoes off before going into our room, as the rooms were in the back part of the owner’s house. plus we were too late for dinner, so we felt a little bit like we might get told off at any turn. other than that a really nice place, amazing views back towards the glacier went into hofn to grab some pizza. not much there, though the views are good. i would imagine it is a great place to stop off if you are doing the ring road in a clockwise direction, as it would be your first place to stop with views of the glacier. long drive (4 hours) through the eastern fjords. really pretty, though desolate in places. saw some weird sights along the road. a couple of hundred swans bobbing about in a lagoon. a dog chasing cyclists up the main road. had to stop for sheep a couple of times, too. also went through a 6km lon
